Passive smoking - information on the dangers of passive smoking to children and family, and dangers of passive smoking to an unborn child

Passive Smoking

Of all the people who we have helped to stop smoking, the number one reason they give for wanting to stop smoking is, not surprisingly, their health.

Following a close second though, is for their children.  Whether it's being worried that their smoke will harm their children, or just being fed up at having to go and stand in the garden for ten minutes to have a cigarette in the middle of winter!

The truth is, passive smoking kills... and not just children... it kills partners... it kills friends... it even kills your pet cats and dogs.

Cigarette smoke contains thousands of chemicals, many of which are highly toxic, several of which are known to be cancer causing agents.

3,600 people are killed by passive smoking in the UK every year

Smoke produced at the tip of a cigarette enters the atmosphere in two ways.  What is known as 'mainstream' smoke travels through the cigarette, through the materials contained it, usually through a filter, and then is further filtered by the lungs of the smoker.  This smoke is then breathed out into the atmosphere.

What isn't commonly known, is that the smoke that travels directly from the burning tip into the room, or 'sidestream' smoke, is much more dangerous

The dangerous chemicals released in sidestream smoke are basically the same as in the mainstream smoke, but are in much higher concentrations.  Carbon monoxide,  for example, can be up to 15 times more concentrated in sidestream smoke.

This is what your children, friends and other loved ones (including your cats and dogs) breathe in.

I don't just want to stop smoking for me...
I want to stop smoking for my kids.

Smoking parents can cause breathing difficulties, coughing, asthma and ear problems in their children, and those children are 200% as likely to go on to smoke in the future.
